Aston Villa are among several Premier League clubs keen to sign Tottenham’s talented young midfielder, Lucas Bergvall. The Swedish international has made it clear he wants to leave Spurs in search of more consistent playing time and a bigger role.
Villa initially expressed interest in Bergvall back in January, and Football.London’s Spurs correspondent Ali Gold has shed light on the player’s current situation and potential.
Bergvall experienced a promising start to his Spurs career, with manager Ange Postecoglou giving him considerable game time during an injury crisis. He impressed enough to be voted player of the season by the fans. However, under Thomas Frank, he found himself in and out of the team, often played out of position on the wing or as an attacking midfielder, even though his natural role is as a central number eight.

Injuries hampered Bergvall’s opportunities during Igor Tudor’s brief tenure, and Roberto De Zerbi has preferred experienced players to secure Spurs’ Premier League status. Despite this, Bergvall has made 78 appearances over two seasons—a solid record for a player who only recently turned 20—but he realizes his chances next season will be limited with new signings on the horizon and no European competition.
Regarding his future potential, Bergvall is rated highly. His all-around game, stamina, and physicality suit the demands of the Premier League. While still developing, consistent starts in his preferred midfield role would accelerate his growth. Although he hasn’t yet started for Sweden at the World Cup, that could change following recent national team struggles.
Spurs may regret letting Bergvall leave. Alongside other young talents, they risk losing a player who could become a star. Given Bergvall recently signed a five-year contract, Spurs have leverage to demand a significant transfer fee and include a sell-on clause.
Bergvall’s key strengths include his technical ball control, energy, and physicality—impressive attributes for a teenager. His main areas for improvement are decision-making and composure under pressure, which occasionally lead to lost possession in fast-paced matches. This has partly contributed to his current transfer situation, suggesting the need for patience in nurturing his potential.
In summary, Aston Villa have a real opportunity to secure a gifted young midfielder who could become a cornerstone of their squad. Bergvall’s talent and ambition, combined with Villa’s willingness to offer him a central role, make this a transfer worth pursuing.
