A primary school in Walsall has achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming one of the first in the Midlands to receive ‘exceptional’ ratings under Ofsted’s new inspection framework. This achievement stands out, particularly given the school’s location in one of the country’s most deprived and high-crime areas.
Many schools in inner-city and town centres, including those in the Black Country and Birmingham, face significant challenges. Unlike selective grammar or fee-paying schools, these institutions serve local children regardless of ability, making their successes even more noteworthy.
E-ACT Reedswood Academy, located just steps from Walsall town centre, is a shining example of resilience and excellence. Serving around 500 pupils aged 3 to 11, this school has defied expectations by securing three ‘exceptional’ ratings for achievement, leadership and governance, and personal development and wellbeing.

Ofsted’s report highlighted the extreme deprivation faced by students but praised the school’s ability to foster outstanding progress. “Year after year, pupils’ progress and attainment in national tests and assessments are significantly higher than average,” the report stated. The school’s dedication to core subjects such as English and mathematics equips pupils to excel across a broad curriculum with numerous high-quality opportunities.
Leadership at Reedswood Academy has been described as “superb,” with a strong focus on continuous improvement benefiting every facet of the school’s work. This commitment has resulted in elevated achievement levels and a strong sense of community where all students feel they belong.
In a double celebration for Walsall, nearby Goldsmith Primary School in Bloxwich also earned exceptional ratings, further highlighting the dedication and success of schools in this challenging region.
