UK Households Prepare for Major Disruption with Stockpiles of Cash and Tinned Goods

A recent survey by Link research reveals that millions of UK households are preparing for potential major disruptions to daily life by stockpiling essentials such as cash, tinned goods, and emergency supplies. Respondents were asked about their contingency planning in case of events that could severely impact normal services.

The findings show that 15% of people have kept a reserve of banknotes and coins specifically for emergencies. Half of those surveyed have battery-powered items like torches readily available, and nearly half maintain a supply of tinned foods including baked beans and canned fruit.

Additionally, over a third reported having power banks at home to keep mobile phones charged, while 20% have access to portable cooking equipment such as camping stoves. Overall, 17% disclosed having a cash stash kept at home as a precaution.

Graham Mott, Link’s director of strategy, commented, “With rising public concern over threats like power outages, cyber-attacks, and disruptions to card payments, more people are ensuring they have emergency cash and supplies at hand.”

Professor Tim Lang emphasized the importance of social cohesion during times of crisis, saying, “Experience from shocks and conflicts shows that maintaining community unity is essential to preserving social order.”

He advises careful planning for scenarios involving no cooking facilities, water shortages, and loss of internet access. “You need to consider what you can live off for a week or more if things worsen,” he said. Professor Lang shared his personal emergency food supplies, including large jars of beans, dried goods, tins of fish such as sardines, and oats—foods that are nutritious, long-lasting, and require minimal preparation.

As UK households brace for uncertainty, many are ensuring they have the resources needed to manage disruptions and maintain resilience in challenging times.
