As the Championship season draws to a close, Birmingham City prepare for their final fixture away at Portsmouth—a match that marks the end of the road for several players donning Blues colors for the last time.
Heading into this crucial encounter, Birmingham City aim to secure at least a point, which would see manager Chris Davies guide the club to its best Championship points tally since the 2011/12 season. However, whether this achievement ensures Davies’s continuation beyond this campaign remains to be seen, as owners Knighthead prepare to evaluate the club’s future direction in their post-season review.
The summer will inevitably bring transitions, with squad reshaping on the horizon. Several players in the Portsmouth lineup are likely making their final appearances for Birmingham. Davies’s pragmatic approach suggests he won’t offer farewells purely for sentiment, meaning each selection is driven by performance and strategy.

Two players undoubtedly set to depart are the Brighton loanees, goalkeeper James Beadle and winger Ibrahim Osman. Both lack buy option clauses in their loan deals and are expected to return to Brighton at season’s end. While Davies has shown interest in bringing Osman back, the hefty £16 million price tag linked to the player may hinder another temporary deal if Brighton are unwilling to negotiate.
Osman is anticipated to feature after recovering from concussion protocols that saw him substituted early in last Wednesday’s victorious match against Preston. During Osman’s absence, Demarai Gray stepped up with an assist and a near-miss, showcasing an encouraging performance and earning his place back in the lineup.
Defensively, the backline ahead of Beadle should remain unchanged, as Davies is unlikely to disrupt defensive consistency. Up front, the attacking quartet of Carlos Vicente, Osman, Jay Stansfield, and August Priske looks set to maintain their roles. A late-season goal for Priske would be a fitting highlight in what has been a promising period for the young striker.
Midfield selection presents the primary uncertainty. Tomoki Iwata has often been deployed away from home to form a robust partnership with Jhon Solis, starting in four of the last six away games. Paik Seung-ho, meanwhile, has struggled to replicate his home form on the road, a challenge faced by many Blues players this season.
Given the importance of securing a final victory to give the campaign a positive finish, it is likely Davies will rely on the Solis-Iwata midfield pairing.
Predicted Birmingham City XI (4-2-3-1):
James Beadle; Isaiah Osayi-Samuel, Marc Neumann, Marc Klarer, Marc Wagner; Jhon Solis, Tomoki Iwata; Carlos Vicente, Jay Stansfield, Ibrahim Osman; August Priske.
