The Data Speaks: Jay Stansfield’s Impact at Birmingham City

Jay Stansfield’s journey with Birmingham City tells a compelling story—and at just 23 years old, it’s far from over.

The striker recently scored the 50th league goal of his young career, with 41 of those coming for the Blues, helping his team secure a vital victory over Preston North End. This marked his third goal in four matches against Preston and ended a 13-game goal drought that had frustrated many supporters.

Stansfield openly spoke about working with a psychologist to manage the pressures and high expectations that come with being Birmingham City’s record signing. The stigma and criticism haven’t been easy, especially after a disappointing substitution at Hull City, when fans voiced their disappointment loudly.

However, Birmingham’s head coach Chris Davies publicly defended Stansfield, reaffirming the striker’s value to the team just before the Preston match. Freed from some of the surrounding pressure, Stansfield delivered a standout performance, scoring and creating chances.

Reflecting on his recent struggles, Stansfield said, “Every forward wants to be scoring goals and it hasn’t quite clicked for me this season. It can get difficult. There’s a lot of noise and I’ve got used to it over the last few years. This year, it’s got to me sometimes but I’ve gone out and done my best for the team.”

While often deployed as a number 10—a role blending second striker and attacking midfielder—Stansfield’s contribution remains impressive. Out of his 39 league starts this season, 24 came in this position. Despite that, he managed 10 goals and seven assists, placing him among the top ten goal creators in the Championship.

Only a select group of players, including Zan Vipotnik, Haji Wright, and Oli McBurnie, have recorded more goal involvements than Stansfield this season. His 11 ‘big chances’ created also lead the Blues, underscoring his evolving playmaking skills.

Beyond statistics, Stansfield’s relentless work ethic and stamina stand out, qualities unmatched by many of his teammates. Yet, there is room for improvement, especially in possession. With a 66.7 percent pass completion rate, enhancing his ability to deliver precise passes and maintain control under pressure will be crucial.

It’s fair to note that Stansfield’s form, and indeed Birmingham City’s performance, dipped after November. While he isn’t solely responsible for the team’s fortunes, the squad’s reliance on him is evident—his goal droughts vividly felt by fans and teammates alike.

Now that he has broken out of his slump, Stansfield is already looking ahead to next season. After playing 97 games over two intense seasons, including representing England under-21s at the European Championships, a period of rest is well-deserved.

If this season is considered a challenging one, it piques curiosity about what Stansfield’s best season could look like. The next chapter beckons: leading Birmingham City in their push for promotion back to the Premier League.
