‘Revolutionary’ EV Charging Upgrade Promises Huge Savings for UK Drivers

A groundbreaking development in electric vehicle (EV) charging is coming to the UK, promising substantial cost savings for drivers. InstaVolt, one of the country’s leading public EV charging operators, has announced a £2.5 million investment in five new battery energy storage systems (BESS) sites, with plans to add 20 more by the end of the year.

These new sites include locations such as Hadfer Ltd at Bwch Moch Cafe, National Co-op at 311 Lower Addiscombe Road, Burney Group at Harwich 2, BNP Paribas at Northampton Williams Way, and Three Trees Farm Shop and Cafe. They will join three existing sites already operational at Winchester and Corley North and South.

Delvin Lane, InstaVolt’s CEO, describes battery storage as “one of the most powerful tools” in their arsenal. He emphasized the company’s commitment to passing the savings directly to consumers, despite the complexity and costs involved, including standing charges and VAT.

The battery systems work by storing electricity on-site when demand is low and distributing it to the chargers as needed. This innovation reduces the size of grid connections required and guarantees consistent ultra-rapid charging even during peak times.

InstaVolt has branded this initiative as “revolutionary.” Lane explained, “We’re the first to provide this kind of battery storage system on a motorway network. This project is a major milestone for InstaVolt and the UK’s public charging infrastructure."

He added, “Smart energy management like this ensures ultra-rapid charging remains reliable while easing strain on the grid. Innovations such as these are vital to making EV charging scalable, sustainable, and ready for the future.”

Supporting this view, Dr Andy Palmer, founder and CEO of Palmer Energy Technologies, highlighted the significance of InstaVolt’s approach: “The grid connection problem is real and persistent. InstaVolt understands you don’t have to wait for centralized solutions. By storing inexpensive overnight power in batteries and using it during peak hours, they reduce costs and pass those savings to drivers. It’s smart, disciplined infrastructure thinking.”
