Rachel Reeves Raises EV Tax Threshold, Exempts 116 Models from £440 Luxury Charge

The Labour Party Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, has confirmed a significant change in Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) policy benefiting electric vehicle (EV) owners. From April 1, the Expensive Car Supplement (ECS), an additional £440 annual charge often dubbed the “luxury car tax,” will no longer apply to electric cars costing up to £50,000. Previously, this threshold stood at £40,000.

This adjustment means that 116 different EV models across 23 ranges, priced between £40,000 and £50,000, are now exempt from the luxury car tax, offering substantial savings to approximately 475,836 drivers. The change, first announced at last year’s Autumn Budget, came into effect from 1 April 2026 but applies to electric vehicles registered from 1 April 2025 onwards.

While petrol and diesel vehicles are still subject to the £40,000 threshold for the ECS, this new policy marks a clear incentive for electric car ownership and a financial reprieve for buyers eyeing mid-range EVs. Alex Lee, motoring expert at Dick Lovett, applauds the move, highlighting how it grants buyers more flexibility to choose higher-spec trims without incurring extra tax burdens.

The RAC explains that most EV drivers currently pay £200 annually in VED, but the luxury car tax pushes this up to £640 for more expensive models. With the threshold increase to £50,000 exclusively for EVs, the new rules extend the tax exemption to a broader range of electric cars, easing the financial strain for many.

In summary, the updated VED regulations mark a targeted shift to encourage more widespread EV adoption by reducing the cost penalties on pricier electric models. Petrol and diesel drivers, however, continue to face the existing £40,000 threshold for the luxury car tax.
