Promising Youngster Modou Keba Cisse Poised to Shine at Aston Villa This Pre-Season

Modou Keba Cisse is gearing up for a major opportunity to impress Aston Villa manager Unai Emery during this summer’s pre-season, following a standout campaign in Austria. The young defender played a vital role in LASK’s Austrian Bundesliga title triumph last season, showcasing his talent and growth.

Cisse joined Aston Villa in a €5 million deal but remained on loan at LASK for the 2025/26 season. Throughout the campaign, he made 30 appearances across all competitions, featuring prominently in the heart of LASK’s defence. The 20-year-old started 26 of the club’s 32 league matches under coach Dietmar Kuhbauer, contributing significantly to their championship win.

Austrian football expert Dorian Schuster shared insights with BirminghamLive about Cisse’s impact and development during his loan spell. “Cisse wasn’t the key defensive figure but added crucial balance to LASK’s three or five-man backline,” said Schuster. “Alongside more physically imposing teammates like Andrés Andrade and Joao Tornich, Cisse brought agility and sharp positioning to the centre-back slot.”

Schuster praised Cisse’s long passing ability, which effectively linked defence to attack, particularly targeting forwards like Adeniran and Kalajdzic. However, he acknowledged that Cisse’s youth and limited experience sometimes led to avoidable mistakes—highlighted by a costly fifth yellow card in the 92nd minute of matchday 31, which sidelined him for the decisive final game.

Looking ahead, Schuster believes Cisse could either contend for a first-team spot at Aston Villa or be loaned to a club slightly stronger than LASK to continue his development. “Before joining Villa, he attracted interest from French Ligue 1 clubs such as ESTAC, a league where Austrian players have historically thrived,” he added.

Turning 21 in August, Cisse has benefited from Austria’s robust youth development system. Schuster commented, “The Austrian Bundesliga offers one of the best environments globally for young players, thanks partly to Salzburg’s focus on nurturing ‘young and wild’ talent. While LASK hasn’t been renowned for player development until recently, they are evolving. Recent successes include homegrown Tobias Lawal and Keito Nakamura, who was sold to Ligue 1 for a record €12 million.”

With a strong foundation and valuable experience gained in Austria, Modou Keba Cisse is well-positioned to make a significant impact at Aston Villa. This pre-season could mark the beginning of a promising chapter for the defender and a potential cost-saving asset for the club.
