Plans for 24/7 Casino Operation Rejected on Birmingham High Street

Plans to extend the operating hours of the Admiral gaming shop on Birmingham’s Bristol Road South to a 24/7 schedule have been rejected by local authorities. The gaming outlet, operated by Luxury Leisure and located in a unit formerly occupied by Boots Pharmacy, had applied for permission to remain open around the clock.

On April 22, the planning application was officially refused, a decision welcomed by Northfield councillor Esther Rai. “I’m really pleased to hear that this won’t be happening,” said Rai. “We want more businesses on our high street, but ones that encourage investment and help build community.”

The decision comes amid growing concerns over the concentration of gaming and betting establishments in the area, which includes Betfred, Playland Amusements, Funspot Amusements, Admiral, and William Hill. Northfield MP Lawrence Turner has raised the issue in Parliament, highlighting the proximity of these shops to off-licences. Describing the situation as a “revolving door,” Turner linked it to local antisocial behaviour problems.

“There’s nothing wrong with having a drink or a flutter,” Turner stated. “But I think there’s a strong case for more local powers to restrict the sale of cheap super-strength alcohol near betting shops.”

As of April 27, Luxury Leisure has not submitted an appeal against the rejection. The community and local representatives remain focused on promoting responsible business practices that contribute positively to the high street’s vibrancy and safety.
