Nine Million Pensioners to Receive £200 Bonus Under Andy Burnham’s Premiership

Approximately nine million state pensioners are expected to receive a minimum £200 bonus later this year if Andy Burnham becomes Prime Minister. The former Greater Manchester Mayor is widely anticipated to succeed Keir Starmer following his recent resignation.

Under the current Winter Fuel Payment scheme, which is likely to remain intact, pensioners aged over 65 with annual incomes below £35,000 continue to qualify for this support. This threshold covers about three-quarters of all retirees.

The payment is designed to assist older people in keeping their homes warm during the cold winter months. Those under 80 receive £200, while pensioners aged 80 and above receive £300. The allowance is income-linked, with individuals earning above £35,000 having the payment clawed back in installments by HM Revenue & Customs.

These rules were established two years ago when Labour returned to power, and no changes under Burnham’s leadership have been indicated. Maintaining this support is seen as crucial, especially after previous reductions negatively affected public perception during Starmer’s tenure.

Burnham’s administration aims to prevent similar setbacks and ensure the continuation of vital financial assistance for millions of pensioners this winter.
