Nationwide Leads UK Banks by Introducing Payment Reference Muting to Combat Economic Abuse

Nationwide Building Society is pioneering a crucial change to protect customers from economic abuse by allowing them to hide abusive payment references. This initiative makes Nationwide the first UK high street lender to introduce a feature that blocks harmful messages embedded in payment references, preventing financial harassment from current or former partners.

Payment references, typically used to provide payment details, have become a tool for abusers to send offensive or triggering messages. Recognizing this, Nationwide’s new “hide reference” feature enables victims to continue receiving payments without exposing themselves to psychological harm. Kathryn Townsend, Nationwide’s head of customer vulnerability, emphasizes that domestic abuse extends beyond physical violence and can infiltrate everyday banking systems. She explains, “When applied, the ‘hide reference’ feature puts control back with the customer, where it belongs.”

This innovation has been praised by Sam Smethers, chief executive of Surviving Economic Abuse, who called for other financial institutions to follow suit: “For far too long, domestic abusers have exploited everyday banking tools, like payment references, to harass and control survivors even after separation.”

Nationwide has demonstrated its commitment to supporting abuse survivors through ongoing partnerships, including one with domestic abuse charity Refuge. Andrew Ball, Nationwide’s Head of Supplier Management, highlights the importance of this collaboration: “With one in four women experiencing some form of economic or domestic abuse, it is vital that we have support available for customers when they need it the most.”

Emma Pickering, Refuge’s Head of Technology-Facilitated Abuse and Economic Empowerment, applauds Nationwide’s efforts, stating, “One in four women will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime, and cases are continuing to grow in both quantity and complexity. Thanks to Nationwide Building Society, Refuge will be able to expand its support for survivors of abuse.” She adds, “No survivor should have to navigate domestic abuse alone, and Nationwide’s commitment means we will be able to ensure even more survivors receive the support they deserve.”

By introducing this groundbreaking feature, Nationwide sets a powerful example in the banking sector, reaffirming its dedication to protecting vulnerable customers and addressing the broader challenges of domestic and economic abuse.
