Masked Teenager Jailed for Dudley Machete Attack in Money Dispute

A 17-year-old boy wearing a balaclava has been sentenced to detention after attacking a man with a machete during a dispute over money in Dudley. The incident, which took place on October 4 last year, involved the teenager hiding the weapon under his clothing before meeting the victim, who had come to collect money he believed was owed to him.

According to Wolverhampton Crown Court, the victim was a friend of the boy’s mother and had previously stayed at their home. The dispute arose after the mother allegedly used the victim’s bank details to withdraw between £400 and £500 without permission. When the victim arrived to demand payment, he was met downstairs by the youth, who was dressed in dark clothing and a balaclava.

What followed was a violent confrontation captured on CCTV. After a verbal argument, the victim attempted to headbutt the teenager, prompting the boy to brandish the machete. He swung the blade multiple times, striking the victim’s face and arm before fleeing the scene with the weapon, which remains missing.

The victim sustained serious wounds to his nose, head, right arm, and wrist, although it appears he did not seek further medical treatment. The boy was arrested several weeks later on October 29 and subsequently admitted to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of a bladed article.

During sentencing, Judge Michael Chambers KC highlighted the graphic violence displayed in the footage and acknowledged the defendant’s troubled background, including experiences of domestic violence and multiple failed care placements. Despite these challenges, the judge noted recent signs of progress by the teenager.

The court handed down a 16-month detention and training order, underscoring the severity of using a machete in an attack that caused significant harm. The case serves as a sobering reminder of the need to address the underlying issues affecting vulnerable youth.
