Cancer Research UK has permanently closed its Swindon store, with “Now Closed” signs recently appearing on the windows following weeks of clearance sales. This closure is part of a strategic move affecting around 200 other stores across the UK.
The charity has announced plans to reduce its high street footprint to approximately 320 shops by May 2026, which includes closing 90 outlets. An additional 100 stores are set to close by April 2027. These decisions are based on factors such as the shops' financial performance, lease conditions, and geographic distribution.
Alongside the physical store closures, Cancer Research UK will also discontinue its online marketplace in early 2026, ceasing sales of donated items on reselling platforms.

To adapt to changing consumer habits and rising operational costs, the charity plans to expand its network of larger out-of-town stores. It aims to open 12 new “superstores” by 2028, designed to offer spacious and value-oriented shopping experiences. This shift is expected to boost the retail division’s financial contribution by £12.4 million over the next five years.
Michelle Mitchell, CEO of Cancer Research UK, emphasized the necessity of these changes: “Without action, many of our shops would become unprofitable. A smaller, high-performing retail operation will enable us to fund more life-saving cancer research and better serve our customers, staff, and volunteers.”
Mitchell acknowledged the challenges ahead, assuring support for those affected: “These decisions have been taken after serious consideration. We are committed to providing clear information and assistance throughout this transition.”
