Major Expansion and Upgrade Planned for Solihull’s Reynalds Cross Special School

Reynalds Cross School, a key special education provider in Solihull, is set to undergo a significant transformation to accommodate more pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Councillors recently approved ambitious plans aimed at not only expanding but also modernizing the school’s facilities.

One of the main drivers behind the project is the urgent need to replace The Link building, which currently houses 20 students with severe learning difficulties. According to Jamie Rynberk, specialist place planning manager for Solihull Council, the building has reached a point where repairs are no longer economically viable.

The redevelopment plans include securing planning approval by mid-August, with the completion targeted for January 2028. Once finished, the school will offer 30 additional places, significantly increasing its capacity to support pupils requiring specialised education.

Beyond the expansion, the upgrade features the creation of a multifunctional life skills training hub and an outreach facility that will operate after hours, extending benefits to the wider local community. This innovative addition aims to enhance pupil independence and engagement while fostering stronger community connections.

Councillor Karen Grinsell, cabinet portfolio holder for children, education and skills, expressed enthusiasm: “It’s a fabulous school but it needs some major work to be done – so very excited this is going to happen.” Addressing concerns about staffing raised by Councillor Samantha Gethen, Jamie Rynberk explained that the increase in pupil numbers will be phased gradually to ensure adequate recruitment and maintain quality support.

The plans were formally approved during a virtual council meeting held on June 15.

This development follows the recent decision to cancel a planned new special school at the Sans Souci Training Centre after the council missed out on vital government funding. Instead, a £7.1 million grant will be invested in creating additional specialist places within mainstream schools throughout the borough, complementing the enhancement of Reynalds Cross School.
