Lidl Introduces New Self-Scanning Technology to UK Stores for Faster Checkout

Lidl is stepping up the shopping experience with a major upgrade to its checkout process in several UK stores, allowing customers to skip queues and shop more flexibly. The discount supermarket chain, which operates branches including in Birmingham, is rolling out its Lidl & Go self-scanning tool in seven additional locations as part of an ongoing trial.

Previously tested in select stores, Lidl & Go enables customers to scan items as they shop, monitor their spending and savings live, and finalize purchases quickly via self-checkout terminals—all through the Lidl Plus app. This seamless integration aims to offer a smarter, faster, and more flexible shopping journey.

The new rollout covers stores in Airdrie, Cardiff, Epsom, Glenrothes, Kingston, Guildford, and Eastleigh. Lidl says this phase will provide valuable insights to optimize and improve the service ahead of a broader expansion planned for 2026.

Louise Weise, Lidl GB’s Chief Customer Officer, emphasized the initiative’s role in digital innovation: “This trial is another step forward in our digital evolution, giving shoppers a smarter, faster, and more flexible way to shop. Whether customers prefer traditional checkouts, self-service, or self-scanning, we want to ensure they have the freedom to shop on their own terms.”

Ryan McDonnell, Chief Executive Officer at Lidl GB, added, “Integrated into Lidl Plus, Lidl & Go represents a significant leap in our technology offerings, simplifying everyday life while respecting customers’ shopping preferences. At Lidl, customers are always in control of how they shop.”

This advancement highlights Lidl’s commitment to enhancing convenience and customer satisfaction in a competitive grocery market alongside rivals like Aldi, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Morrisons, and Asda.
