Lidl Accelerates Plans to Demolish Former Harborne Day Centre for New Store

Lidl has fast-tracked its plans to demolish the former Harborne Day Care Centre, following a proposal submitted earlier this year. The site, previously owned by Birmingham City Council, was closed and sold off last year, marking the end of its service to the community.

In May, Lidl filed an application to clear the existing buildings and construct a new 24,000 square foot supermarket on the 2.5-acre site located off West Boulevard in Quinton. The project also includes a 120-space car park to support customer access.

A public consultation held last month drew more than 300 responses, with an overwhelming 93% expressing support for the development. Advocates believe the transformation will reinvigorate the area and once again serve local residents.

Should the plans receive approval, full demolition and site clearance will occur ahead of a scheduled 2027 construction start date. The new Lidl store is expected to create approximately 40 jobs, providing a significant economic boost to the community.

Councillor Sam Forsyth welcomed the proposed development as a positive addition but emphasized the importance of addressing potential traffic challenges associated with the site.
