Labour Loses Control of Tamworth Borough Council as Reform UK Sweeps Every Seat

In a striking turnaround during the 2026 local elections, Labour has lost control of Tamworth Borough Council as Reform UK claimed every seat up for election, marking a jubilant night for the party and signaling a significant political shift.

Reform UK’s unprecedented clean sweep in Tamworth saw the party win all nine seats contested, drastically altering the political landscape. While only one-third of the council seats were up for election, Labour, previously the dominant force in the Staffordshire town, now finds itself under intense pressure as the council moves into a state of no overall control.

Previously without any councillors just weeks ago, Reform UK now boasts ten councillors, becoming the main opposition party overnight. Labour and the Conservatives each lost a seat, with the latter—historically dominant in Tamworth throughout much of the 20th century—failing to secure a single seat and shrinking to only three members on the borough council.

Reflecting on the victory, Reform councillor Paul Turner told the BBC, “I think it’s the right time for the country to stand up and say the old guard has had their time and it’s time for change. And I’m really looking forward to that opportunity.”

One of the most dramatic results of the night was the defeat of Sarah Daniels, the former portfolio holder for cooperative council, community partnerships, and anti-social behaviour, who lost her Bolehall seat to Reform UK’s Dylan Powis by a margin of 668 votes.

Hayley Coles, Staffordshire County Council’s deputy leader and newly elected councillor for Amington, described the result as “excellent,” emphasizing the public’s desire for change locally and nationwide. She noted the influence of Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, whose straightforward approach resonates with voters seeking answers.

As all results were finalized, Reform UK deputy leader Richard Tice joined the celebrations, expressing enthusiasm: “We’re absolutely delighted. One of the earliest results concluded—it’s brilliant for those nine councillors elected here in Tamworth.”

With this shakeup, Tamworth Borough Council faces an uncertain future as it adjusts to a new balance of power, ending an era dominated by Labour and marking the rise of Reform UK in local politics.
