I love going to the cinema. Sure, watching a film at home with snacks you’ve picked up from the supermarket is more affordable, but there’s something undeniably special about the big screen experience. When I saw a social media post praising a ‘luxurious’ cinema in Birmingham, I knew I had to check it out for myself.
I booked tickets for me and my boyfriend to see Hokum, a newly released Irish horror film, and made our way to the Omniplex cinema in Rubery. Upon arriving, I was pleasantly surprised by the ample parking – a rarity in city cinemas – and even more shocked by how large the building was, far bigger than I had imagined.
Stepping inside felt like being transported back to the 1980s American movie scene. The cinema’s décor featured retro food trucks and a nostalgic vibe that instantly caught my attention.

After scanning our tickets to enter, we headed to the self-service kiosks to order food and snacks. The menu was impressively vast. From chicken strips to burgers and pizza, it was clear you could enjoy a full meal alongside your film. Classic cinema staples like hot dogs and nachos were also on offer.
Prices were varied – a slice of pizza was £5, and a whole pizza cost £30, which seemed steep. However, the burgers and chicken strips were reasonably priced, comparable to a standard fast-food takeaway. Since we weren’t too hungry, we opted for combo meals each, which included a medium popcorn and a drink for £10.40 – about the same price as just a medium popcorn at my usual cinema, so I was satisfied with the value, even if bringing your own popcorn would be cheaper.
The cinema also had two food trucks: one serving alcoholic beverages and another for food pickups. For their special Luxx screenings, you don’t even need to leave your seat to order, as the recliners come with full table service.
Because we ordered simple snacks, we collected them promptly from the main desk and settled at one of the many tables in the foyer – perfect for those who prefer to eat before the film rather than during.
The highlight of my visit was the reclining seats. While other cinemas like Vue and Cineworld offer premium reclining seats in just a few rows, every seat at Omniplex reclines. Premium screenings even feature reclining sofas, though unfortunately, they weren’t available for our showing.
I quickly made myself comfortable, enjoying the range of reclining options. Each seat also had an adjustable table with a secure cup holder, making it easy to keep track of your snacks without worry.
Overall, my visit to Omniplex exceeded expectations. The experience was comfortable and enjoyable, and the price was comparable to larger, more popular chains. Between the roomy parking, nostalgic atmosphere, and reclining seats, I can confidently say this is Birmingham’s best cinema – and I can’t wait to return.
