HMRC Encourages Families Earning Under £100,000 to Benefit from £2,000 Childcare Savings

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is urging working parents earning under £100,000 annually to explore the Tax-Free Childcare scheme, which can provide up to £2,000 per year in savings per child. This initiative aims to ease the financial burden of childcare costs for families across the UK.

Announced via X (formerly Twitter), HMRC highlighted the simplicity and benefits of the scheme just in time for Easter: “With Tax-Free Childcare, working parents could save up to £2,000 per year per child up to age 11, or £4,000 for disabled children up to age 16.” The scheme functions by topping up every £8 deposited into a dedicated Tax-Free Childcare account with an additional £2 from the government, potentially saving families up to £500 every three months.

Thousands of childcare providers now accept payment through the scheme, covering a wide range of needs, including term-time childminders, wraparound care, holiday clubs, and workshops, helping busy parents manage childcare year-round.

To benefit, parents should visit GOV.UK and search for Tax-Free Childcare to verify eligibility and apply. The scheme is open to all workers, including the self-employed, provided the child is under 12 years old, or under 17 if the child has a disability. Eligible parents must earn at least the national minimum wage but no more than £100,000 annually.

Financial expert Martin Lewis has praised the scheme but warned about its misleading name. He clarified: “Tax-Free Childcare is a misnomer—it’s not linked to your tax rate or tax-free allowances. A more accurate title would be ‘Working Family Childcare Top-up,’ as it functions like a 25% government top-up on childcare savings.” He believes the confusing name has contributed to lower-than-expected uptake.

Overall, the Tax-Free Childcare scheme presents a valuable opportunity for working families to reduce childcare expenses significantly. Those eligible are encouraged to apply and take full advantage of the government’s support.
