Foreign Office Urges UK Tourists in Bolivia to Stay Put Amid Transport Strikes and Safety Concerns

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has revised its travel guidance for Bolivia following announcements of an indefinite transport strike affecting routes around La Paz. As of May 6, 2026, the interprovincial transport union in La Paz commenced a strike, prompting disruptions in bus services and increased safety risks.

The FCDO warns that bus tickets labeled ‘condicionado’ indicate no guaranteed arrival at destinations. Travelers are urged to check local updates before attempting any journeys and strictly advised not to attempt crossing road blockades due to potential dangers.

Walking on certain roads is considered hazardous because of ongoing violent incidents and the challenging effects of altitude. Those currently in safe accommodations along affected routes are strongly encouraged to remain there and comply with local authorities’ instructions.

The FCDO specifically advises against using roads on impacted routes until further notice. However, flights are continuing as normal.

British nationals trapped behind road blockades or in need of urgent consular support are advised to contact the British embassy in Bolivia at +591 2-2010020.

Additional caution is urged for travel to the Chapare region in the Cochabamba Department, including Villa Tunari and highways 4 and 24 passing through Chapare, where all but essential travel is discouraged.

Travel safety cannot be guaranteed at this time. Those who decide to travel should thoroughly research their destinations and secure comprehensive travel insurance covering their planned activities and any emergency expenses.

The FCDO’s travel advice aims to provide clear risk assessments to help British travelers make informed decisions while abroad. Up-to-date travel information is available on the FCDO website, and travelers can sign up for email notifications to receive the latest updates.
