Foreign Office Updates Turkey Travel Advice Amidst Hotel Check-In Concerns for UK Visitors

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has revised its travel guidance for Turkey as of May 8, addressing important considerations for UK travelers. These updates provide crucial information on Ramadan practices, terrorism threats, and hotel check-in policies, particularly concerning minors.

Ramadan, a sacred month for Muslims, will next likely commence between early February and early March 2027, lasting 29 or 30 days. Visitors are advised to seek further guidance upon arrival from tour operators, hotels, or local contacts. During Ramadan, it is important to respect local customs: refraining from eating, drinking, smoking, or chewing gum in public daylight areas—including inside vehicles—is recommended to avoid offense. Additionally, playing loud music, dancing, or swearing publicly may be considered inappropriate.

Travelers should verify the opening hours of shops and restaurants, as many establishments may separate non-fasting guests from those observing Ramadan, often using screens or partitions during fasting hours. Adhering to local dress codes is essential, as inappropriate clothing may cause offense during this period.

Drivers should exercise caution as traffic may become unpredictable, especially near dusk when many are eager to return home. Patience and understanding are encouraged, recognizing that fasting may lead to fatigue during late afternoons and early evenings.

In accommodation matters, there have been reports of hotels refusing to check in children aged 17 and under unless accompanied by a parent or guardian or unless written—and sometimes notarized—parental consent is provided. Travelers with minors are advised to confirm these requirements directly with their accommodation providers well in advance.

The FCDO also highlights ongoing global terrorism threats targeting UK nationals, with Turkey being no exception. Terrorist activities have predominantly occurred in southeast Turkey, Ankara, and Istanbul. Visitors should remain vigilant, stay informed via local media, and comply with instructions from local authorities to ensure safety.

By staying informed and respectful of local customs and regulations, UK travelers can navigate their visits to Turkey more smoothly amid these complex considerations.
