Foreign Office Updates Travel Advice for Six Countries Including Cuba and Austria

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has updated travel guidance for six countries, reflecting recent developments in Europe, the Americas, and Africa. Among the nations impacted are Cuba, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Bolivia, Belize, and Austria.

In Austria, the FCDO has removed travel information related to the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 following Bulgaria’s victory with Dara’s hit “Bangaranga.” Meanwhile, the UK’s Eurovision entrant finished last, but maintained a positive outlook.

Significant concerns persist in Cuba where, as of 13 May, the government announced severe shortages of diesel and fuel oil. This shortage is causing widespread disruption to essential services such as transport, healthcare, and communications. Fuel rationing and reduced public services are now in effect to conserve limited energy supplies. The FCDO warns travelers to prepare for sudden changes and emphasizes that options for leaving Cuba might become more limited as airlines adjust schedules or suspend flights.

In Belize, a 30-day State of Emergency has been declared in Belize City and the Belize District due to escalating gang-related violence. This includes a curfew for minors between 8 pm and 6 am, and extended police powers aimed at restoring public safety.

Health risks have also influenced travel advice. Uganda and eastern DRC are currently experiencing Ebola outbreaks, with hundreds of suspected cases and dozens of deaths. The World Health Organization has designated this outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Travelers should check entry requirements carefully and remain informed about health screenings and restrictions.

Finally, the FCDO advises against all travel to the Bolivian department of La Paz following reports of potential violent disruptions near government buildings on 18 and 19 May 2026.

Travelers are reminded to thoroughly research destinations, maintain valid travel documents and visas, and secure comprehensive travel insurance covering their plans and any emergencies.
