The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is providing state pensioners with a significant financial boost by offering back payments equivalent to up to three months of Pension Credit in a single lump sum this May. Pension Credit, a benefit aimed at supplementing the income of pensioners on lower earnings, can be worth anywhere from £2,600 to £4,300 per year, according to various personal finance experts.
For those eligible at the lower end of the payment scale—around £260 per month—this could mean receiving approximately £780 in one payment, all backdated from the date of eligibility up to three months prior to the application.
Applicants can start the Pension Credit application process up to four months before reaching State Pension age. If you apply any time after reaching State Pension age, payments can only be backdated up to three months. This means your initial payment could include up to three months’ worth of benefit, providing a valuable financial cushion.

With the next payment date set for May, retirees are strongly encouraged to apply promptly to receive their entitled benefits. The application process requires some key information, including:
- Your National Insurance number
- Details of your income, savings, and investments as of the date you want to backdate your application (usually up to three months ago or when you reached State Pension age)
- Your bank account details
Applications can be completed online if you have already applied for your State Pension. If applying by phone, you can call the Pension Credit claim line at 0800 99 1234. Relay services are available for those with hearing or speech difficulties (dial 18001 then 0800 99 1234). Additionally, a British Sign Language (BSL) video relay service operates on weekdays from 8 am to 6 pm for computer users.
For those who prefer a paper application, a claim form can be printed out or requested by phone. Completed forms should be sent to the Pension Service using the freepost address provided; there’s no need for a postcode or stamp.
If your application is denied, you have the right to challenge the decision via a process called mandatory reconsideration.
This opportunity for an upfront lump sum can be a crucial financial aid for pensioners. Make sure to check your eligibility and apply soon to secure the payments you deserve.
