DWP Highlights 12 Health Conditions Qualifying Pensioners for £459 Attendance Allowance – Including Falls

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has identified 12 health conditions that commonly qualify state pensioners for Attendance Allowance payments, a vital benefit that provides financial support to those needing extra help due to illness or disability. Notably, this list now explicitly includes falls.

Attendance Allowance is a non-means-tested benefit available to people over State Pension age who require assistance with daily living tasks because of their health condition. While there is no official, exhaustive list of qualifying medical conditions, the determining factor is how a condition impacts an individual’s ability to manage everyday activities — rather than the specific diagnosis alone.

Benefits and Work, a prominent disability and DWP-focused forum, has highlighted these 12 conditions most frequently linked to successful Attendance Allowance claims. Legal expert Jonathan Owen shared the story of Margaret, a 79-year-old pensioner living alone with arthritis and poor eyesight. Despite not having a carer, Margaret struggled with dressing and managing medication, but after applying, she now receives £110.40 per week. This financial support has enabled her to arrange additional help and improve her quality of life.

Owen and his team of experienced financial planners stress that if you face difficulties managing a mental or physical health condition—even if it isn’t one of the commonly cited ones—you may still be eligible for Attendance Allowance. Many people mistakenly believe they do not qualify because they feel they are “not disabled enough,” have no carer, or that their condition isn’t serious.

In reality, Attendance Allowance is awarded based on the need for support with essential tasks such as washing, dressing, bathing, taking medication properly, preparing meals, eating, or even requiring supervision to prevent dangerous falls. Importantly, eligibility is assessed on whether you need help with these activities, regardless of whether you currently receive assistance.

The allowance is paid at two rates, with the higher rate amounting to £114.60 per week, which totals approximately £459 per month—providing essential funds to help pensioners live more safely and independently.
