The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is issuing early Universal Credit payments of £424 in May to support claimants ahead of the upcoming Bank Holiday. Typically scheduled for Monday, May 25, Universal Credit payments will instead be disbursed three days earlier, on Friday, May 22.
This adjustment ensures claimants receive their funds on a working day rather than the holiday. The DWP explained, “After the first payment, you’ll be paid on the same date each month. If your payment date falls on a weekend or bank holiday, the payment will be made on the preceding working day. You can view your monthly statement online to see your payment details.”
In addition to the early payment, the Universal Credit standard allowance has increased by nearly £25 per month from April. Single claimants aged 25 or older will now receive £424.90, up from £400.14, while joint claimants aged 25 or over will see an increase from £628.10 to £666.97 per month.

This above-inflation rise has been confirmed by Chancellor Rachel Reeves as part of measures to support low-income individuals and families.
Citizens Advice highlighted the impact of these changes: “Universal Credit payments consist of a standard allowance plus additional amounts based on individual circumstances. Adjustments to the standard allowance will affect the total monthly payment.”
Universal Credit supports those on low incomes, unemployed, or unable to work, with payment levels dependent on factors including employment status, earnings, and family situation. Eligible claimants may receive extra amounts, such as for children or disabilities.
Furthermore, Labour plans to abolish the two-child benefit cap, potentially increasing Universal Credit payments for larger families. These updates aim to provide a significant cost-of-living boost for millions of vulnerable households across the UK.
