DVSA Implements New Transparency Rule for Driving Test Waiting Times

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has introduced a new rule effective immediately, aimed at providing greater transparency for learner drivers nationwide amid ongoing test backlogs. Starting today, the DVSA is publishing comprehensive wait time data on GOV.UK, offering the most detailed insight ever into driving test availability.

This data release includes six key metrics: the median wait time from booking to test, the number of tests completed via examiner overtime each month, and the total number of appointments available over the forthcoming 24-week booking window. Additionally, the DVSA will report the number of tests already booked, remaining available slots, and the percentage of availability within that booking period.

This initiative responds directly to recommendations from the National Audit Office’s (NAO) investigation into prolonged driving test wait times, aiming to provide a clearer picture than the previously used 10% availability metric alone. Importantly, the new data includes actual median waiting times to reflect learners' real experiences.

DVSA CEO Beverley Warmington commented, “The public deserves to know how the car driving test service is really performing. From today, we’re publishing additional data to more accurately show learner drivers’ actual experience, following the NAO’s recommendation. This builds on ongoing efforts to improve driving test delivery.”

With monthly updates broken down by individual test centres, prospective drivers and stakeholders can now access transparent, up-to-date information on test availability, helping manage expectations and plan accordingly.
