Dudley Council Approves New Gastro Pub in Sedgley and Dance Studio at Kingswinford School

Sedgley is set to welcome a new gastro pub after Dudley Council planners approved the change of use for a vacant High Street unit. The premises, which includes a ground-floor shop with two floors of residential accommodation above, has been empty since 2021, reflecting a decline in demand for retail space in the area.

The plans, submitted by agent Complete Design, outline the internal transformation of the unit into a hospitality venue. The proposed layout will feature a bar, kitchen, and restroom facilities, along with a new acoustic suspended ceiling to minimize noise impact on the residents upstairs. The existing entrances on Dudley Road and rear loading access will be retained, with deliveries scheduled weekdays between 9am and 5pm to reduce disruption.

Importantly, no external changes will be made, preserving the building’s current appearance. The proposed gastro pub is expected to operate from 10am to midnight daily and will create two full-time jobs, contributing to local employment.

Council officers have confirmed that the proposal aligns with the Black Country Core Strategy and Dudley Borough Development Plan, and it will not negatively affect the vitality or viability of Sedgley town centre. They also noted, with appropriate conditions, there should be no adverse effects on local residents or highway safety.

In other developments, Dudley planners also approved the conversion of three classrooms at The Kingswinford School, located on Water Street, into a gym and dance studio. This internal modification does not change the school’s educational use and was granted a certificate of lawful development without the need for full planning permission.
