Drivers Face Up to £5,000 Fine for Wrong Footwear Choices During UK Heatwave

During the ongoing UK heatwave, drivers are being cautioned about the risks of wearing unsafe footwear behind the wheel—a choice that could cost them up to £5,000 in fines. Many motorists may feel tempted to swap their usual shoes for flip-flops, sandals, or even drive barefoot to stay cool, but car experts highlight significant safety concerns.

Ben Raffell, automotive specialist at BigWantsYourCar.com, explains: “While taking off your shoes in hot weather might feel more comfortable, driving in socks alone or in loose footwear can reduce your grip on the pedals, increasing the risk of your foot slipping during critical moments like braking or accelerating. This compromises safe vehicle control.”

Footwear that shifts unexpectedly, such as flip-flops or sliders, can become lodged under pedals or prevent drivers from applying the right amount of pressure when needed. Though there is no explicit law banning these types of footwear, police can issue penalties if they believe a driver’s shoe choice impaired their vehicle control.

Raffell adds, “If improper footwear is linked to careless driving, drivers might face fines, penalty points, and in severe cases, fines reaching £5,000. Footwear-related issues contributing to accidents can lead to even harsher consequences.”

For maximum safety, Raffell advises drivers to wear flat, secure shoes with good grip. “It might seem like a minor detail, but proper footwear can be crucial during emergencies and ensure you maintain full control of your vehicle.”
