Complete List of Birmingham Streets Scheduled for Transformation with Construction Timelines

Construction efforts to revamp Birmingham’s city centre are well underway, with significant progress made on New Street. As contractors put the finishing touches on the upgraded road, it’s a good time to share the upcoming phases of this major project.

Since early January, New Street has been undergoing extensive work, including the removal of the Frankfurt Christmas Market stalls to make way for an enhanced public space. The transformation will feature top-quality paving, wider footpaths, new safety barriers to guard against hostile vehicles, as well as cycle stands, benches, and dedicated bike parking areas.

The project also involves revising traffic orders to create a more pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly environment. Improved wayfinding signage will help visitors navigate effortlessly, providing a seamless, level route from New Street station to nearby shops and businesses.

Contractor CPC Civils emphasizes that the goal is to deliver ‘high-quality public spaces’ that boost Birmingham’s environment and connectivity. They have shared a detailed schedule outlining when each phase of the work is expected to start and finish.

Although there were minor adjustments to accommodate foundational repairs beneath the pavement, the overall timeline remains on track. The entire scheme aims to be completed by January 2028.

Below is the comprehensive list of streets set to undergo these transformative works, along with their anticipated construction dates. Note that this excludes the sections on the upper part of New Street and Victoria Square, where work is already in progress.

Please be aware that timelines may shift as the project advances. For a clearer understanding, a full map is available to visualize the scope of the planned improvements.
