The UK’s cheapest supermarket for April has been confirmed as Aldi, boasting prices nearly £2.50 lower than its closest competitor, Lidl. According to a recent report by consumer group Which?, a basket of 96 commonly purchased items at Aldi averaged £172.77, making it the most budget-friendly option for shoppers last month.
Each month, Which? compares thousands of prices across eight of the UK’s leading supermarkets—Aldi, Asda, Lidl, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, and Waitrose—to determine where consumers get the best value for groceries, drinks, and household essentials.
Aldi frequently claims the top spot, closely trailed by Lidl. In April, Lidl’s prices with its Lidl Plus loyalty program came second at an average of £175.20 for the same basket, £2.43 more expensive than Aldi. Without loyalty discounts, Lidl’s average rose slightly to £175.29, placing it third.

Asda ranked fourth with an average basket price of £197.91, while Waitrose registered as the most expensive supermarket, with an average basket cost of £242.04 for 96 items.
Loyalty discounts influenced prices across several retailers; Sainsbury’s applied discounts on 21 items, Tesco on 23, and Lidl on two, with the report accounting for prices both with and without such schemes.
The report also examined a larger basket of 221 items, including a wider variety of branded goods typically not available at discount chains like Aldi and Lidl. For this expanded basket, Asda took the top spot for the second consecutive month, with an average cost of £567.56.
Tesco, benefiting from its Clubcard loyalty program, placed second at £576.88, followed by Morrisons at approximately £590. Sainsbury’s prices with Nectar loyalty were slightly higher, with the supermarket ranking as the second most expensive for the larger basket. Waitrose remained the priciest option, with shoppers paying an average of £659.58—a significant £92.02 more than Asda.
This detailed pricing analysis highlights how loyalty programs and product range can influence grocery costs, but overall Aldi remains the go-to supermarket for the best value on essential shopping.
