Sam Neill, the acclaimed actor celebrated for his roles in the Jurassic Park franchise and the BBC series Peaky Blinders, has died at the age of 78. His family announced the news on Monday morning, describing his passing as sudden and unexpected.
Born in Northern Ireland and raised in New Zealand, Neill gained international fame portraying Dr. Alan Grant in the original 1993 Jurassic Park film and reprised the role in subsequent sequels. He was also widely recognized for his portrayal of Chief Inspector Chester Campbell in Peaky Blinders, where he played a ruthless, corrupt police officer determined to clean up the town.
Earlier this year, in March 2023, Neill publicly revealed his diagnosis of an aggressive form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Thankfully, after undergoing CAR-T cell therapy, he announced in April that he was cancer-free. “We’ve just had a scan just now and there is no cancer in my body, that’s an extraordinary thing,” he told 7 News Australia.
Despite his cancer-free status, Sam Neill’s death came unexpectedly. According to a family statement, he passed away in Sydney surrounded by loved ones, maintaining the dignity he was known for throughout his life. The family expressed profound gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their care and requested privacy as they cope with this tremendous loss.
More details regarding his passing are expected to be shared in due course.
