Barclays has rolled out a significant update to its banking app, removing the long-standing “memorable phrase” security feature. This change has left many customers anxious, with some fearing their accounts were compromised.
Previously, the memorable phrase appeared prominently at the top of the app upon login, serving as a reassuring security check for users. However, with the recent update, this feature has been removed without clear communication, leading to frustration and confusion.
One Reddit user shared, “My mum panicked after the update and it took nearly an hour and two arguments to convince her it was okay.” Others expressed dissatisfaction with Barclays’ lack of clear messaging around the change. Some customers even contacted the bank, worried their accounts had been hacked after noticing the missing phrase.

In a message to customers, Barclays explained: “We’re always looking for ways to make banking faster, smarter and easier for you, which is why we’re updating the Barclays app. Designed with you in mind, you’ll experience a better way to manage your money day-to-day. Your security remains our priority, so rest assured your app still has the same trusted protection and secure login features you rely on.”
A Barclays spokesperson further clarified to The Sun: “We continually invest in our mobile banking app, ensuring that we provide the latest enhanced security, including biometric logins, device recognition and enhanced fraud monitoring. With over 70% of our customers already choosing to log in using biometrics, we are exploring how and where we keep the ‘memorable word’ security feature. Customers’ accounts remain protected by multiple layers of security.”
It’s important to note that customers need to be at least 11 years old to use the Barclay’s app. While business and wealth account holders can access the app, certain features may be limited. Additionally, the app currently does not support Android (Go edition) devices. Users with Android tablets can use the Barclaycard app to view their Barclays accounts, even without a Barclaycard.
