Banks and Building Societies Overtake Retail in UK Customer Satisfaction Index

For the first time in many years, banks and building societies have surpassed the retail sector in the latest UK Customer Satisfaction Index (UKCSI). Nationwide Building Society emerged as the top brand within the banking sector, receiving high praise for its customer service.

Jo Causon, CEO of the Institute of Customer Service, highlighted the steady improvement in customer satisfaction within banking. “The sector has undergone a remarkable transformation since the financial crisis, regaining trust through excellent digital innovations and empowered, well-trained staff delivering complex services,” she said. Causon also noted the positive influence of Consumer Duty regulations, which have sharpened the focus on customer experience at the highest levels of financial firms.

An FCA spokesperson added, “Consumer Duty is supporting better outcomes for customers, and we remain committed to working with firms to build confidence and trust in financial services.”

Published biannually, the UKCSI for January shows satisfaction levels holding steady at their highest point since mid-2022. However, consumers exhibit less confidence in the UK economy and their personal finances compared to six months ago, underscoring the continuing challenges businesses face. Causon advises companies to intensify efforts on service quality, AI integration, and overall customer experience to maintain engagement and drive growth.

Stephen Noakes, Nationwide’s group retail director, attributed their success to mutual ownership values: “We prioritize our members by keeping every branch open, investing in digital services, and rewarding members directly with our Fairer Share payment for the fourth consecutive year.”

Andrew Gall, head of savings at the Building Societies Association, commented, “Customers appreciate the blend of convenient digital banking and reliable face-to-face support. Our sector’s ongoing investments in both areas are key to building customer trust and confidence.”
