‘Avoid the Area’ Warning Issued Following Massive Fire at Wolverhampton Recycling Yard

Over 24 hours after a major fire erupted at Jones Skips recycling yard in Cross Street, Wolverhampton, authorities continue to advise residents and workers to avoid the area. Those nearby have also been urged to keep doors and windows closed as a precaution against smoke and potential pollutants.

The fire was first reported around 4:25 am on Monday, July 6, involving approximately 1,000 tonnes of recyclable materials. The blaze quickly spread to a large shed-like building and damaged some machinery within the yard.

Firefighters faced significant challenges in tackling the fire due to the extensive volume of deeply embedded materials and difficulties accessing certain areas of the site. To assist, on-site staff operated a mechanical grabber to break up and move the recycling debris, enabling crews to better control the flames.

By 6 pm on Monday, steady progress had been made as teams continued to dampen down remaining hotspots. However, West Midlands Fire Service indicated that fire crews would remain on site through the night to fully extinguish the fire.

An update released early Tuesday morning at 5:26 am reiterated ongoing firefighting efforts and the safety advice for locals: “We still have crews in attendance at a fire on Cross Street, Wolverhampton. As a precaution, if you live or work nearby, please keep doors and windows closed. Avoid the area, where possible.”

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and ask the public to stay clear of the site to ensure safety and allow emergency services to work effectively.
