UK shoppers should prepare for a noticeable change in British strawberries this summer, thanks to a cooler spring that has lengthened the ripening process. The British Berry Growers have explained that lower temperatures during the spring season have allowed the berries to mature more slowly, resulting in improved size and flavor.
Nick Marston, chairman of British Berry Growers, commented: “The start of the British strawberry season is always eagerly awaited. While this year’s cooler spring meant consumers had to wait a little longer, the extra time has produced outstanding fruit quality. The longer maturation period encourages well-shaped strawberries that develop enhanced sweetness and size.”
The prolonged cooler weather has benefited the berries by allowing them to stay on the plants longer, which helps build richer taste profiles and superior sugar content. “Good things come to those who wait,” Nick added, emphasizing the benefits of patience this season.

To adapt to the UK’s variable climate, growers are incorporating new technologies and eco-friendly practices aimed at optimizing the harvest and extending the strawberry season. Nic Leeds, director at Berry World’s Withers Farm in Herefordshire, said, “Consumers can look forward to sweeter, juicier, and sometimes larger berries this year.”
Innovative approaches are also underway at Dyson Farming in Lincolnshire, where growers employ vertical farming combined with advanced robotics, intelligent systems, and renewable energy to produce strawberries year-round. Lucie Redwood, commercial manager at Dyson Farming, explained, “By engineering precise growing environments, we can ensure consistent quality British strawberries regardless of the season.”
Strawberries remain a staple for many UK households during summer and continue to be closely associated with iconic events like BBC Wimbledon, which kicks off in June and runs through July. This season’s strawberries promise a tastier experience, making the wait worthwhile.
