Affordable Charm: Kings Heath Bakery Offers Nostalgic Treats Under £3

Nestled between the vibrant neighbourhoods of Stirchley and Kings Heath, Birmingham’s Dads Lane has long been famous for its iconic fish and chip shop. Now, it boasts another local gem: The Cake Place, a cozy bakery serving up nostalgic bakes at affordable prices.

Located next to the Co-op on Dads Lane, The Cake Place invites visitors with a sunny terrace and an enticing aroma of fresh bread and pastries. Inside, the bright space features greenery, neon signs, and a gleaming glass counter filled with an array of treats — from crusty cobs and sausage rolls to old-school cakes.

Owners Sinead Hanihan, 23, and Amber Hickey, 20, opened the bakery in March, just a month before the nearby Pineapple Road train station began operations. Their menu is refreshingly simple, focusing on classic favourites like pineapple creams, lemon drizzle slices, brownies, and hearty pasties — with most items priced under £3.

Sinead and Amber’s approach reflects their shared experiences and community values. Growing up in Birmingham with single mothers, they understand the challenge families face when trying to afford treats in pricier, artisan bakeries. “It’s not nice going into a shop and not realising the prices before you go in,” Sinead said. Amber added, “Most single moms can’t go into a shop and get something for everyone. It gets expensive when there’s a lot of you.”

By choosing to set up shop in a residential neighbourhood rather than a bustling high street, they’ve kept prices accessible for local families. The response has been heartwarming, especially from families and schoolchildren nearby who appreciate having a friendly, affordable bakery at their doorstep.

On quieter weekday mornings, The Cake Place offers a peaceful spot to enjoy fresh bakes and coffee, while Fridays and Saturdays see a bustling crowd eager to get their hands on fresh sausage rolls, pasties, and sweet slices. The bakery’s charm lies in its simplicity — offering “basic cakes” with occasional special treats — and in making quality baked goods welcoming for all.

A visit left us delightfully stocked with pineapple cream, jam and coconut cake, lemon drizzle, and a rich chocolate concrete slab — all for under £8. With sunny days ahead, The Cake Place’s inviting terrace will surely become a favorite spot for locals craving classic treats and a touch of nostalgia.

The Cake Place is located at 58 Dads Lane, Birmingham, B13 8PQ.
