£2m Investment to Add 200 New Places at Wolverhampton Schools, Including a Popular Parental Choice

Wolverhampton is set to expand its school capacity with a £2 million investment, creating over 200 new pupil places across four schools ahead of the new academic year in September.

The expansion will take place at Moreton School in Bushbury, Aldersley High School, St Matthias School in Deansfield, and Bilston CE Primary School. The City of Wolverhampton Council highlighted Bilston CE Primary as a “very popular parental preference,” with plans to add an extra 30 places there.

In partnership with Amethyst Academies Trust, the council is allocating £1.725 million to develop new places at Moreton School and Aldersley High School. Moreton School will increase its capacity by 90 places, including a new Year 7 bulge class of 30 students and 30 additional places in both Years 8 and 9. Aldersley High School will add 70 places, featuring a 30-place Year 7 bulge class and 20 extra places for Years 8 and 9.

Aldersley High School is already undergoing expansion work, extending its sports hall to include new changing areas and additional learning spaces. The gym and dance studio will be relocated to make room for extra classrooms, along with modifications in the IT department to further increase capacity.

St Matthias School will see an increase of 15 places, although this expansion will not be accompanied by additional funding. The council plans to hold further discussions to assess future demand and capacity at this school.

Bilston CE Primary School will receive £150,000 to add 30 extra places. Traditionally, the school accommodates 60 pupils per year group, but it currently runs 30-pupil bulge classes in Years 4 and 6. The planned work includes reconfiguring a classroom for different age groups, refurbishing toilets, and installing new fencing to enhance the school environment.

These measures aim to ease pressure on school places in the city and ensure families have access to their preferred educational options.
