When Birmingham City secured Sam Cosgrove from Aberdeen for a reported £2 million in January 2021, hopes were high. The powerful centre-forward, boasting 31 goals in 79 Scottish Premiership appearances and back-to-back 20-plus goal seasons, seemed poised to replicate his Scottish scoring feats in the English Championship. However, Cosgrove struggled to find the net, mirroring the challenges later faced by Kyogo Furuhashi at Blues.
Cosgrove’s form had already dipped before his transfer, managing only three goals in 14 games after football’s Covid break during the 2020/21 season. Nonetheless, Blues’ management, including Xuandong Ren and Aitor Karanka, gambled on his potential. Unfortunately, neither Karanka nor successor Lee Bowyer provided him with consistent opportunities. Cosgrove’s first Championship start came late in the season, ending in a heavy 4-0 defeat to Cardiff, followed by another tough outing in a 5-2 loss to Blackburn.
The following season saw Cosgrove loaned to League One sides Shrewsbury Town and AFC Wimbledon, where he scored a modest three goals in 37 appearances. A subsequent loan at Plymouth Argyle during the 2022/23 campaign was more productive, as he contributed 12 goals and helped the club clinch the League One championship.

Barnsley then signed him permanently in 2023, but after seven goals in 60 appearances, he was released. Facing uncertainty, Cosgrove’s next chapter was unexpected — a move to newly established New Zealand club Auckland FC.
Within nine months of joining Auckland FC, Cosgrove transformed into a key player, finishing the season as the A-League’s top scorer with 11 goals and steering the club to its first league title in just two years of existence. Reflecting on his journey, Cosgrove told Paramount+, “Nine months ago, I never would have envisaged this. I was sat on my a*** in England, not knowing where my career was going to take me. This is incredible—one of the best moments of my career. I just want to take it all in because it doesn’t come along very often.”
From an expensive misfire at Birmingham City to a celebrated hero in New Zealand, Sam Cosgrove’s resurgence is a testament to perseverance and seizing unexpected opportunities.
