£117 Energy Bill Discount Erased as UK Households Face £220 Tax Hit

UK households expecting relief from a £117 energy bill discount are instead facing a financial blow as frozen income tax thresholds force many into higher tax brackets. New analysis by the House of Commons Library reveals that this income tax freeze will effectively reclaim all the savings from the energy discount, potentially leaving families up to £220 worse off over the next year.

The Liberal Democrats warn the average taxpayer will encounter a “tax bombshell” ranging between £160 and £220, with London and the South East bearing the brunt—residents there are expected to face average tax increases of £220 and £200, respectively. This situation arises as rising wages push roughly 600,000 people into the basic rate tax bracket for the first time, while approximately 580,000 middle-income earners move into the 40p higher rate.

Daisy Cooper MP criticized the government’s approach, stating, “People will understandably feel cheated by this Government, which claims it’s helping just as it hammers them with a multi-billion pound stealth tax grab at the same time.” She further accused Labour of continuing Conservative policies, pointing out that Labour now also freezes tax thresholds that push working people into higher taxes.

The Liberal Democrats describe these developments as wiping out any energy bill savings, leaving families significantly worse off. Cooper emphasized, “Families across the country are seeing their incomes squeezed – they’re working harder and harder just to stay afloat,” highlighting the growing financial pressure on ordinary households.
